GET TO THE TOP OF GOOGLE

Every time you design your own web page, think how you can build it to get to the top of Google---if you’re serious about getting more web traffic.

Maybe lots more internet traffic.

Hyperbole?

Nope.

Plain fact.

Everybody who has ever been online has seen the “Search Results” page for Google (or Yahoo, Bing, Ask or other) in response to their search query.

Typically, there are ten results on each page and there can be dozens or even a hundred pages.

Several years ago, AOL inadvertently disclosed the results of some research it had done on the effect a web page’s position in the Search Results had to clicks (traffic).

The results (involving 9,038,794 total searches that led to 4,926,623 clicks) were stunning, as evidenced by this graph:

get to the top of google

89% of the 4.9 million clicks went to a web page displayed on the first Search Results page (1-10).

10% of the 4.9 million clicks went to a web page listed on the second Search Results page (11-20).

Only 1% of the 4.9 million clicks went to any other web page (21-the end) of all the rest of the Search Results pages put together!

Do you have a website?  Take this little test.

Enter a search query in Google using a keyword for a web page on your site.

Does that page display on the first page of the Search Results?  The second?

Can you find it at all?

Now do you see why you want to get to the top of Google?

If you’re still not convinced at how important search results position is to the click rank, look at this data:

Click Rank1: 2,075,765 clicks
Click Rank2: 586,100 = 3.5x less (than Click Rank 1)
Click Rank3: 418,643 = 4.9x less
Click Rank4: 298,532 = 6.9x less
Click Rank5: 242,169 = 8.5x less
Click Rank6: 199,541 = 10.4x less
Click Rank7: 168,080 = 12.3x less
Click Rank8: 148,489 = 14.0x less
Click Rank9: 140,356 = 14.8x less
Click Rank10: 147,551 = 14.1x less

Click Rank1: 2,075,765
Click Rank2: 586,100 = 3.5x less than ^ (the web page ranked immediately above it)
Click Rank3: 418,643 = 1.4x less than ^
Click Rank4: 298,532 = 1.4x less than ^
Click Rank5: 242,169 = 1.2x less than ^
Click Rank6: 199,541 = 1.2x less than ^
Click Rank7: 168,080 = 1.2x less than ^
Click Rank8: 148,489 = 1.1x less than ^
Click Rank9: 140,356 = 1.05x less than ^
Click Rank10: 147,551 = 1.05x more than
^

As stunning as the fact is that nearly 90% of all the clicks went to the web pages on the first page of the Search Results is this:

The page occupying the #1 position not only got 42% of all the total clicks on the planet for the keyword but ten times as many clicks as the web page  just five positions lower (Rank 6)!

Take Time to Design Your Own Web Page for Success

While it is probably impossible to get every one of your web pages onto the first or even the second page of Google, if you work strategically, build your own web page intelligently following a couple of simple rules, and then market your page via articles, blog posts, bookmarking, Twitter, Facebook, etc., you can get more web traffic.

Once you get a web page onto the second page of Google’s Search Results (you’ll get to the second page of Yahoo and Bing much faster), set your goal to get onto the first page.   Then, using techniques (like posting articles to directories, etc.), overtake them, one by one, until you get to the top of Google.

If you don’t think it can be done, see how I did it at Make a Web Page for Traffic, and know this: you can probably do even better.

Think Strategically

1.  Design your own web page around these concepts

v  Keyword selection (3000+ searches/month) and

v  Few competing web pages (80,000 or fewer) and

v  Weak competition (from Market Samurai data)

2.  Apply SEO (Search Engine Optimization) techniques

3.  Get back links via writing articles, bookmarking, blog posts

Give yourself the best shot to get to the top of Google.  Follow the strategy above, build your own web page as we’ve suggested, and more web traffic is sure to come your way.

Finally, here's a kind of "road map." Along the left NavBar are a series of web pages devoted to a particular step or item you should consider doing as you build your own web page for success.  I've tried to limit each page to a discrete topic so, to better understand matters, I recommend starting with the first section on the Nav Bar and working your way down, one section at a time.

You can--and should--design your own web page (or at least some of them) specifically to get onto the first two pages of Google's Search Results as your first step.

You can accomplish that goal if you implement the strategy described above (keywords with more than 3,000 monthly searches and keywords with less than 80,000 competing pages in an Exact Match search).

That's the easy part, believe it or not.

But to get to the top of Google, its first page or the top of its first page, requires understanding the weaknesses of your opponents and exploiting them.

I'll show you how in a very important section, SEO Competition Analysis (skip this section if you have no interest on getting onto the first page of Google's Search Results).
